A right of way establishes the legal limits of a utility or access route. A right of way project often involves obtaining and providing information regarding ownership of the land that the project will cross along a proposed corridor or route. This information is used to negotiate the purchase of the land for the right-of-way. The surveyor obtains ownership information from the public records, prepares a map showing current ownership, delineation of major topographical features and the relationship of the proposed route to the existing ownership. As the project progresses, the surveyor may be involved in the preparation of legal descriptions of land to be acquired, construction layout and as-built surveying of the improvements.
